Alec is an X5 like Max, and Ben (s1ep17)'s twin (clone ?). Raised in Manticore, he's chosen to be Max breeding partner. But she escapes and Manticore is burnt down, leaving Alec alone in this new world.

About his character, Jensen says : "He's kind of this fun, humorous, kinda cocky guy who likes to run things. He doesn't take anything from anybody."  (© 2001 teenmag.com)

Some people (including me !) wish to see a romance develop between Max and Alec in season 3 (hello  M/A shippers) ! Let's cross our fingers and praise the Blue Lady !...
